But which stone to choose?
Here are some pointers to consider...
Granite
Granite not only looks impressive: it's tough. That makes it ideal for use in high-wear situations such as in your kitchen because it's hard wearing and water repellent. It's also a popular choice in upmarket commercial settings such as hotel lobbies, bars and restaurants.
Slate
We're often asked for slate worktops, but these are far too easily damaged to be practical. To get the same sort of look, honed black granite is a fine alternative. Because its polish has been removed it has the appearance of slate with all the hardiness of granite. Textured blacks such as Anticato also provide a completely different look.
Composite (Caesarstone or Quartzstone)
Another option is the new composite range. These come in bolder primary colours, dazzling whites and some feature mirror flecks for a strong design statement. Composites are typically made up from about 93% quartzite and 7% resin. They are somewhat less durable than granite and a little easier to scratch, although more stain and knock resistant.
Marble
Like slate, marble is too soft and porous to withstand the battering that your average kitchen worktop will endure. However, this classically elegant stone is perfect for bathrooms and flooring; also fireplaces, fire surrounds and hearths where a more decorative appearance is desired.
